Over the past few months, some of my friends and new acquaintances asked me for shooting and DSLR tips so I organized the first DSLR ShootFest for us to get together and practice. It was a gorgeous day as you can see in this photo. Some of my other pictures from the day were shown on SFist. Check out the DSLR ShootFest Flickr pool. The next outing will be sometime in April on Treasure Island.

I drove out to Marin Headlands with a specific location in mind for this week’s shot. I tried some new equipment to trigger my off-camera flash because I’d heard that it would be better. Turns out it wasn’t. It took me 57 shots to accept that it wasn’t working. I got back in my car and started heading home when I saw a turnaround that I hadn’t taken before. I followed it and came upon this spot that was safe from the wind and also quite beautiful. I decided to go back to the equipment and technique I’d been using since week 1 and can only say, “self timer and Nikon Creative Lighting System FTW!”
When I was in Chicago, my friend Nora was a jumping machine. This was the 77th shot at the second location we went to. I was torn between a few good ones. Did I choose the right one? Here are the others. Best part: a tourist was there waiting for someone to take a photo of him with the statue. He hung around watching us and asked Nora if she was in the WNBA.
